Helping Your Child at Home with Vocabulary Building

It’s no secret that a child’s home is the first most important school they will ever have, where parents (a child’s primary and most enduring educator) play a major role in the education and future success of their child.

As a parent you always want what is best for your child—in all areas of life—especially when it comes to academics. One way of doing so is by building a rich vocabulary through active learning, which is important in developing strong reading, writing and communication skills.

Some ways in doing so include:

  • Introducing new experiences, materials and ideas

  • Using descriptive vocabulary when talking and playing

  • Encouraging your child to elaborate and make use of differing descriptive words

  • Reading and discussing the meanings of words within a book

  • Engaging your child in everyday conversation
